3 Ways to Protect Yourself from Becoming a Victim of Insurance Fraud

Studies have shown that insurance fraud is on the rise. More and more people are becoming the victims of insurance fraud. My advice, don't let this happen to you. There are ways to protect yourself. Here are at least 3 ways you can protect yourself.

DON'T MAKE YOURSELF THE NEXT TARGET

1) Before you signoff with an insurance company, know who you are dealing with first. Get to know them, inside and out. There are so many that take on coverage that is too good to be true. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. So investigate who you are going to do business with first. Don't just get hooked on the affordable packaging and things of that nature.

Another way to find out if they are legit, find out if they are accredited through the Department of Insurance. If you don't see them coming up on the list, they are most likely taking advantage of you.

2) Always, and I do mean always, request receipts. Even if it is just a simple transaction, get it in writing. I can't tell you how many times something like this has come back to bite someone on the butt. Always request the paper work. Once you get the paperwork, file it away at home. Put it in a safe place. I get receipts for almost everything I do. This will avoid any issues later.

This way, you can go back and refer to what has been done. This comes in handy when a company tries to tell you that you haven't paid the bill. If you have the receipt, you can counter their claims. Most companies don't expect their customers to pay attention to this sort of detail. Be the exception, not the rule.

3) Avoid paying in cash. I really can't express this enough. When you pay the bill, pay it using a credit card or check. Don't write the check out to the agent either. Always make it payable to the company itself. Some clients have done this in the past, and the money never reached the company headquarters. Three guess what happened to the money, and the first don't count. Leave behind a paper trail, at all times.

And if you find yourself the victim of insurance fraud, make sure you know an attorney in the area who specializes in this type of case. Johnson & Biscone are insurance fraud attorneys who protect numerous people every year in such cases. The threats are real and substantial, so be on the look out.
